Embracing T1D Beauty
As a photographer and a member of the Type 1 Diabetes community, I’ve always been passionate about capturing the beauty and uniqueness of the human form. Lately, I’ve felt a powerful urge to blend my artistry with a mission close to my heart. I’m thrilled to announce a new series of artist nude and boudoir photography that highlights not just the beauty of the body, but also a hint at the reality of living with Type 1 Diabetes. The first person to be photographed for this project is Angela, featured throughout this post.
Celebrating the Art We All Are
In every photography session I see stories, struggles, and triumphs. Each individual I photograph is an artist in their own right, a unique tapestry woven from experience that shape their identity. This series aims to honor that, showcasing the stunning beauty of each person, each photograph telling its own narrative.
The Empowerment of Vulnerability
Participating in a boudoir or nude photography session can be a profound experience. For many, it’s about embracing vulnerability and reclaiming one’s body in a world that often tries to dictate standards of beauty. For my clients with Type 1 Diabetes, this experience takes on an added layer of significance.

Posing with visible insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) becomes a form of expression. These devices are not merely tools of management; they are symbols of resilience and empowerment. They tell a story of daily battles and victories, a testament to their strength in navigating life with Type 1 Diabetes.
The Intersection of Art and Diabetes
In my work, I want to challenge the narrative surrounding diabetes. It’s too often viewed solely through the lens of struggle, fear, and limitation. Instead, I aim to showcase it as part of a vibrant and multifaceted life. In this series, the technology that supports us becomes an integral part of their beauty. The insulin pump and/or CGM become a part of the portrait—an accessory that enhances their uniqueness.

Every photograph captures not just the physical body, but the emotional landscape of living with a chronic illness. These sessions are about empowerment, inviting clients to celebrate their bodies as they are—beautiful and resilient. They remind us that our stories matter and that we are more than our diagnoses.

Living with type 1 diabetes has shaped me into who I am in many ways; it comes with many daily decisions that influence my mental health, presents challenges, and has resulted in a complicated relationship I have with control. It has also made me aware of my strengths; my courage despite fears, dedication to doing the best for my health, and ability to surrender when I struggle due to factors outside my control.

I would not be able to face the demands of T1D without these strengths, nor the experiences that have resulted from all of the low times (no pun intended). Sometimes, it becomes difficult to separate who I truly am from my identity with type 1 diabetes.

Participating in this project was incredibly empowering to share myself in my most vulnerable state, allowing me to reclaim my own body, posed with the technology I’ve used and shared these unique experiences with. Managing diabetes is an art within itself and incorporating these devices in the way these photos have been captured are a reflection of this. I am very grateful to have been the first to take part in this project of which Denny and myself are both passionate about. I hope that this can inspire others to reflect on beauty in new ways and appreciate art that is manifested from lived experiences that make us stronger, such as living with T1D.
Final Thoughts
This new series is a passion rooted in empathy and understanding. I’m committed to showcasing the incredible beauty of people that have stories to tell—stories that intertwine with the complexities of living with Type 1 Diabetes.
